The University of Debrecen is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Hungary offering the widest scale of PhD programmes in the country. Twenty-five doctoral schools cover the broad range of sciences. Doctoral (PhD) training is coordinated by the Scientific Directorate of the University managing all science-related affairs at the university such as talent development, doctoral training, habilitations, scientific degrees, research, and innovation. The role of the University of Debrecen as an international knowledge centre is indicated by the fact that doctoral schools also educate students from beyond the borders of Hungary.
The doctoral program in preventive medicine and public health within the framework of Doctoral Training Programmes of the Medical University was accredited by the Hungarian Higher Education Committee in 1999. In 2000, doctoral training was restructured on the national level as well. Former doctoral programs were either joined or reorganized into doctoral schools. The Doctoral School of Health Sciences was accredited in 2001. The research programme of the Doctoral School Health Sciences is built on strong collaborations with nationally recognised research centres in the field and their leading experts as supervisors offering a wide variety of research topics and PhD courses. The PhD degree is offered to candidates who want to engage in public health research. Holding a university degree, having research proposal and acceptance by a supervisor as well as excellent knowledge in English are requirements to enter the program. The period of the studies is eight semesters. The studies are organised by the faculty doctorate boards, the doctoral schools and the departments of the faculty. The basic unit of PhD students’ achievement is a credit point. Through their PhD studies each student must earn 24 credits for courses, while 216 credits go for research activities. Students will acquire absolutorium at the end of the 8. semester. After the successful examination and defence, the University Doctorate Board decides on the PhD degree of candidates which are certified by an official bilingual diploma of the University.
At present, the Doctoral School Health Sciences has two programmes: beside “Preventive medicine and public health”, a PhD programme entitled “Metabolic and endocrine diseases” was accredited in 2008.
The accreditation of the Doctoral School was renewed till November 30, 2025.
